World Cup thoughts
Jun. 13th, 2006 10:53 amA note to the US team: Guys, please pull your socks up and start playing like grownups. You made it to the Cup when a lot of talented teams didn't. If you don't start functioning a lot better than this, you're never going to have a chance to beat England... (And, on a happier note, a magic reminiscence from a tournament long ago:)
In 1954 when Ireland were playing Luxembourg, they had an inside left called F**kinger. To my eternal glee, he was the best player on the pitch. He was everywhere. (Radio Eireann sports commentator Philip Greene, who would therefore have had to say the player's name about eight hundred times)(snort) Wonder how the FCC would handle that kind of name if it came up in a match these days....

Date: 2006-06-13 02:01 pm (UTC)I've seen players Stateside play better than that, really I have. Me friend and I spent the whole game looking on in a strange flavor of apathetic awe, forgetting to eat, and only occasionally muttering something about formation.
Must admit I don't support my own nation - or really any other in the cup. Just want to see a good game, and that wasn't one for either team. Happily, every other game I've seen so far has been pretty nice.
And F**kinger, oh my. That sounds like the basis for either a drinking game or an FCC aneurysm.

Date: 2006-06-13 04:20 pm (UTC)Re: the FCC … well … I don't really know. Already you get fined more for some minor swearword that only a few special-interest groups can be bothered to actually complain about than you do for far more serious offenses.
I may like my country, but I am not proud of its government.
