I do love California: it's ... quirky

I lived there for a total of seven years or so, and miss the place often. Just don't ask me to be rational about the reasons. Here's one:

Palm Springs Police have yet to catch up with a cross dressing man who robbed a Union Bank branch on Sunrise. It happened just before noon yesterday inside the Ralph's grocery store.

A teller says the suspect walked up to the counter and handed her a note demanding money. No word how much money he got away with.

Officers say the bandit was wearing a blue denim dress with a green long sleeved shirt, khaki shorts and had blond or light brown shoulder-length hair, believed to be a wig.

Another Union Bank of California branch in Palm Desert was also robbed by a man wearing a wig last week.

No word if the two robberies might be related.

Don't see why they would have to be. It's California, people. Move on... 

(But I do want to see the video from the security cameras.)

Waitaminnit. A blue denim dress AND a long-sleeved shirt AND shorts?

Well, I guess he might have been wearing the shirt over the dress as a jacket. But how the hell would they know about the shorts?

Some of those denim dresses button all the way up the front (ie from the hem to the neck). so if he was wearing it "open" then the shorts and shirt would be visible under it.

It makes strategic sense: people are going to notice the outfit instead of the person underneath, which will make it harder to create accurate Wanted posters.

Yep, a bunch of us decided long ago that if you were "average" height & build you wanted one of two outfits for robbing a bank:

1. logo t-shirt for something insanely common (local radio station, local sports team, etc). blue jeans, beat up sneakers, baseball cap with common logo.

2. fluorescent colored hat, shirt, pants and sneakers. All in different, *clashing* colors.

In case 1, as long as you don't have any distintive features, the description will be utterly worthless. Because every fourth guy your size is apt to be wearing it.

In case 2, nobody will notice anything *but* the clothes. Which you will destroy first chance you get.

Back in the 70s, when we discussed this, we figured that just discarding the clothes a block or three away would work fine. But that was before DNA.

Well, if the robber didn't say anything, how did they actually know it was a man? Perhaps it was only an ugly woman with no fashion sense.
