A note of annoyance, and an understandable sentiment, from [info]rhiannonstone. Cut for a naughty word...

First they came for the knitting needles, and I didn't speak up
Because I wasn't much of a knitter
Then they came for the shoes, and I didn't speak up
Because I wear sandals
Then they came for the lighters, and I didn't speak up
Because I don't smoke...

Because I wasn't much of a knitter
Then they came for the shoes, and I didn't speak up
Because I wear sandals
Then they came for the lighters, and I didn't speak up
Because I don't smoke
Then they came for my Dr Pepper --
And now it's on, motherfuckers.

Before ya know it, we'll all be boarding in the nude with empty hands, and our luggage will have to be shipped several weeks ahead of time via UPS.

One local newsreporter was hazarding the guess that business travellers from LA to SF or Las Vegas will start deciding to drive instead of fly. Given that it is actually FASTER to drive from LA to SF than to fly if you count in all that terminal wait and general rannygazoo, I suspect we passed THAT barrier some time ago (I know I did). Of course being unable to bring your laptop without giving the baggage checkers the chance to steal it, proprietory info and all is likely to put the cap on it...

You're flying out for WorldCon, aren't you. My sincerest sympathies!

Er.. SF = San Francisco, LA = Los Angeles. I know you know that, but it's only fair to whoever's reading...

Oh well - "Two more days before the next chapter?", she asked, hopefully...

Looking that way. However, I am about to "shake the can" (and for the last time), so do ask around and see if you can find some more victims patsies nice people interested in subscribing. We are soooooo close to breakeven on this, and I would love to never have to shake that can again.

There was a story reported when the Acela (high-speed train between Boston and NY) started about two reporters who "raced" from Back Bay Boston (I think) to midtown Manhattan. One of the train the other on the Shuttle. The train passenger just barely won. And that was pre-9/11.

What is "shake the can"? I'm fairly new to your LJ so I might have missed any description...

Re can-shaking: I'm publishing the third and last of the "Feline Wizardry" books online (see www.the-big-meow.com (http://www.the-big-meow.com) for all the sordid details). It's being published chapter by chapter at the website: and people who subscribe to the book get a print version of it (paperback or hardcover as they prefer, included in the subscription price) when the book's complete. (Subscribers also get to see the chapters earlier.)

The next chapter will be ready sometime on Monday. and I am very close to the financial "break-even point" I set for the project when it started. When each chapter's ready, I "shake the can" and invite new subscriptions (from those on the "we're vaguely interested" mailing list) and voluntary donations (from those on the donor/subscriber list). When we hit the necessary amount for a given chapter to meet the preset financial go/no-go point for that chapter, it gets posted. However, this time out we're so close to break-even that if enough $ comes in at the Shaking of the Can, I'll never have to shake it again. Which will make me Happy. (Especially just before Worldcon.) ;)

So there you have it. If you know someone who might be interested in supporting the completion of the trilogy, then point them at the website and invite them to make their presence known by subscribing. This is the best possible time...

Subscribing is now on my list of things to do, but I'm not going to be reunited with my credit card for probably another month or so. I trust you're not going to stop _accepting_ money, just soliciting it? :-)

Oh, new subs (and new money) will always be welcome. :) I set the break-even point equal to what I would have normally received for a "work for hire" novel in one of somebody else's universes: that is to say, relatively low. It'll take a good number of subscriptions yet to get this project close to what I would get for one of my own novels these days.

So yes, don't worry, your (later) sub will be very welcome indeed. ;)

Hey, if you let me subscribe by mailing a check instead of the funky paypal thing, I'd already have done it.

Ditto. Heard too many Paypal horror stories to touch it.
