My mother just put her Clan of the Cave Bear books on the uppermost shelf so I couldn't reach them (I couldn't even see them at first). Below that were all my father's science fiction books and classics so I read all of those in elementary school. For the rest my parents really didn't do any censoring and my mother said "Go borrow from the adult section of the library on my card" when I had finished all the children's books (as I was reading adult books at home already anyway).
