Dickens also wrote a "good ending" for Great Expectations when it was published in the newspapers, because the newspaper thought they'd sell less if his story ended badly, but he wrote a "bad ending" because he liked that better himself. The edition I read had a * somewhere near the end and it said: From here on there's one ending, go to page [..] for the other ending.
