*ping* ...AAAAAAUGH

...The "ping" being the right-hand earpiece of my glasses made when it snapped. The "Auuuughhh" being the sound I made as I just barely kept them from falling of my face.

Now here I sit with them taped together in the most fragile and geekette-ish manner imaginable. And exactly at the time when all other funds in the house are spoken for.

Oh well. At least this explains why the vision in my right eye seemed to have been acting so strangely all week. At least I know it's not my retina kicking up or anything.

Now that just stinks. I've had glasses fall apart on me a couple of times like that. Not fun at all.

Man, and they can't even be fixed with a staple, like if they were to pop a screw! That sucks big time! Are those those "magic" glasses that you can wrap around your finger without them breaking (well, ordinarily...). Those look like awesome glasses for the most part, but not so much if they have a habit of doing this!

I had a friend who drilled holes along the edge of the lens (it was plastic) an then he looped wire around the rim and through the holes and tied it back in place. It looked a bit odd, but it worked for years.

I had the same thing happen to me last summer - so once the money was there, I made sure to obtain a second pair of glasses that I could keep in the drawer in case of such emergencies happening again.

What rotten luck - but it might be repairable if an optician can take the two screws(?) out and screw a new side on. If not, then carefully applied epoxy rosin might stick the end of the earpiece into the rightangle between the metal bar of the broken-off end and the screw, parallel to the broken off bar.

(I was an unpaid family carer for years, it's amazing what can be invisibly repaired and last for a long time afterward.)

That's why, when travelling, I always throw an old pair of glasses, in a hard shell case, in my checked luggage. They may not be quite up to my current prescription and they're probably scratched and battered, but they're a life-saver if something bad happens to my main specs.

If you have your prescription, you can order a great pair of glasses online for cheap. I have progressive bifocals that cost about $300 dollars at the eyeglass boutiques that I paid less than $80 for at zennioptical.com. My son's regular glasses were less than $20. (I don't recommend the UV coating, though. It seems to make the lenses extremely susceptible to smudges.)

i have no idea why but I don't think i've had a pair of frames last loner than a year before they fail, the story of my life is walking around wearing glasses held together with gaffa tape. I'm currently wearing a pair of tag hurer frames that have so far broken 3 times due to manufacturing defects and yet again are being held together with gaffa tape

See if your next pair can be titanium. They're awesomely sturdy and last quite a bit.

Oh man, I hate it when that happens. I'm lucky to have NHS vouchers for my glasses, because one pair usually only lasts me two years, and I've had some two-year stretches where I've had to patch 'em up repeatedly to keep them going. Good luck!
