They apparently have an agreement with Cisco to use the name.
http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/09/technology/apple_jobs/index.htm?cnn=yes
There was some question as to whether Apple would be able to use the iPhone name for the device. But Cisco Systems (down $0.09 to $28.54, Charts), which owns the rights to the iPhone name, said Tuesday it expects to reach agreement with Apple later Tuesday on using the name for its device.

"Given Apple's numerous requests for permission to use Cisco's iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement today Apple intends to agree to the final documents and public statement that were distributed to them last night and addressed a few remaining items," Cisco said in a statement obtained by CNN. "We expect to receive a signed agreement today."

Yes, but when does the "WizPod" version with the Manual arrive? (Grins, ducks, runs...))

Serious though, NICE bit of kit. Europe should see it sometime later in 2007 too.

I am considering the wallpaper right now. :) (And the cool thing is that the phone has internal sensors that feel when you change the orientation of the phone from portrait to landscape, and turn the image to match.)

Oh the coolness. Can't wait for this. I knew there was a reason I was putting off getting a new mobile.

That's a very nice feature, that auto-orientation. The Nikon D70 camera certainly has it.

One must assume the WizPod version will use its light and acceleration sensors to tell which sun and planet you're viewing it near, and bring up the appropriate atlas...

Yeah. And I imagine the dialer software has some options with similarities to the function of a Stargate DHD. :)

I sort of imagine something like the Wii controller - make the right mystic passes while holding it, and you connect to anyone you feel like.

(Totally OT: has Peter seen http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6244715.stm? Dave's Insanity Sauce is the thing for brightening up diet soups: it's nice to know that I'm fending off cancer and diabetes.)

Gee, I don't know

Here are more specs (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-apple-iphone/). It quotes a five hour battery life for talk or video, which could mean a lot of time on the charger. There's no word on standby time yet. I hope that it has a "hold" switch on it, because touch screen buttons on a phone can lead to a lot of accidental dialing. I'm actually glad that we're too broke to afford a $499 phone (with contract from Cingular) at present. What with extra charges for your email and downloads, that phone could end up costing you a really pretty penny.

And a proximity sensor, so that it can shut off the touchscreen (and the display!) when you hold it up to your face.

Ah, very clever. That's a bit of a pain on the Sony Ericsson P900.

Apple do very well by throwing huge amounts of design, and I applaud them for it. Heck, they've almost convinced me to go for a Mac!

(It's the educational discount I can get from Dell compared to the lack of one from Apple that is deciding this upgrade cycle.)

I don't find specs on that page. But if it's 5 hours talk, that sounds *good* to me; I don't think I've owned a phone with that much talk time yet. (Standby is much longer of course).

Yeees...My M3100 seems to do all that the Apple does, and more, and with a shiny qwerty (um..I had to think how to spell that!) keyboard it is rather a useful piece of hardware. Not, maybe, as StarTrekTNG dashboard shiny, but I will take function over form every time :)

Which is probably why I'm still waiting for the WizPod software to show up on my iPod. I've got 30 gigs free for it, for Pete's sake!
