A proud title, and one I don't much like to see in the obits column...especially in this case.

Mickey Spillane has died at the age of 88.

Spillane had no pretensions about his writing, going about it with the philosophy that "If the public likes you, you're good."

(The New York Times article title -- subscription-blocked, unfortunately -- reads, "Critic-Proof Writer of Pulpy Mike Hammer Novels". Ah, to be critic-proof...)

The first link seems messed up (I suspect you've repeated the text as the link name).

There's a new TV series on here called Psych. (It's about a guy who has a Sherlockian eye for details, but has to pretend he's psychic in order to convince the police that he knows what he knows.) One of the characters on the show looks for all the world like a Romulan in human disguise (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0491738/PSY05_PILOT_JW153.jpg)! It's not as obvious as it could be in that photo, but watching the show itself I kept thinking, "Whoa, is that Mark Lenard's son or what?" If you can torrent an episode or two, I think you'll be amused.

Ayn Rand admired Spillane's writing. I never read more than a few pages of his, but some excerpts she cited showed his putting more solid imagery into his work than some much-admired "literary" writers.
