My parents didn't even do that. When I was 9 and they found me sobbing while reading 1984, they let me keep on reading. Same when I was 10 and woke up screaming at night after reading about the Holocaust. Same when I was 11 and found out that the Holocaust wasn't just an elaborate, implausible, horrible fairy tale.
Looking back, my parents were either brilliant at letting their kids rapidly absorb adult concepts, or incredibly negligent.
