I'm personally convinced that this is a bit of pack hunter-gatherer thinking hardwired into us. Alpha, beta, omega, just like wolves (why do you think we domesticated them so easily, or we domesticated each other) or chimps. It's an instinct that can be overcome, but only with a fair amount of conscious and deliberate effort.
