ZoomBak A-GPS Locator for Dogs

(And it seems to me that if you could use it for dogs, you could use it for cats as well — assuming that the hardware’s not too big.)

They also do locators for cars, bikes, family members, backpacks, etc. The devices report in via mobile phone, using the T-Mobile network and networks of the company’s roaming partners. (The coverage map doesn’t make it clear whether this coverage extends outside North America.)

Interesting…

It's only been a matter of time before someone invented a useful catnav system...

Not, unfortunately, a view featuring the Great Wall, but pretty.

*groan* I figure the GPS tracker would need to be about a quarter the size before it'd be half-way tolerable for your average house cat. The current one's 2.87" x 1.69" x 0.82". I guess you'd have a chance of retreiving it when the cat shrugged its collar, though.

watching TV the other night, the GPS dog tracking system was being used on, I think, CSI New York to track down a missing person (as he was a dog catcher and had disappeared while out on his rounds in a fairly affluent neighbourhood, there was a chance that at least one of the dogs he'd collected before disappearing would be GPS-enabled) ... and sure enough, that's how they found him.

That's ... kinda awesome. And kinda scary.

I wish the creepy guy who cycled through our neighborhood for two hours yesterday (on his kid's bike, carrying an empty dog lead) had had one of those. It might have taken him less time to find his dog. If he ever found it. Assuming that's actually what he was doing, of course. (I really don't want to think about what he might have been doing.)

I can easily see a time when I could have a programme on my computer which tells me where my kitties are at any given time and I have to say I'd really find that reassuring when they're out and about doing their thing.

Mr. Lee already has a CatCam; just add GPS and automatic Flickr uploading and you could get a very peculiar portrait of your neighborhood.

Actually, the ZoomBak is not suggested for pets under 15 pounds (and most cats fall into that category). So the hardware must be sizable. :)

From the picture at the link, it looks to be about the size of a pack of cigarettes.

I don't think T-Mobile does GSM. And even if they do, it'd be the US version which isn't compatoible with the version the rest of the world uses (different frequencies)\
