Anywhere in Dublin, day or night, you’re likely to be knocked flat by people hurrying along with their heads down as they clutch their mobiles and text each other like crazy.

Now suddenly I’m can’t lose the image of people hurrying through the streets of Vegas, day and night, heads down and clutching their eDecks, gambling like crazy.

(Of course the casinos and gambling providers would need to cover the city with a WiFi cloud… but if there was enough money in it, it’d happen in a Vegas minute…)

I'd be very surprised were I to learn that the major casinos and LV City Hall were not already considering such a network.

If I wanted to gamble, I don't think I would trust a wireless device. I may not know how to break the encryption, but I wouldn't assume that nobody did.

I'd be surprised if we didn't see it soon. There's already a wi-fi network covering the Golden Triangle in downtown Pittsburgh, so it's certainly feasible to do. There's probably quite a bit more use for that kind of tech on the Vegas strip, and plenty of money for it.

Yeah, sure. They can't even collaborate on a public transportation system between casinos without arguing over which one of them is going to get more foot traffic... I can ONLY IMAGINE the legal wankfest of trying to determine if a bet made with your eDeck over public wifi in the lobby of the Wynn with a eDeck checked out at the Mirage counted towards a bet for MGM Mirage or Wynn.

This is exactly, exactly the kind of techno/logistical issue I found myself thinking about.

What. A. Potential. MESS. :)

I figured it out already. The casinos can just build private cell networks and run the eDecks like locked iPhones.

(Public wifi on the Strip would probably be great for tourists, but everyone who lives and actually works here makes an effort not to go down there. It might be a better idea for downtown because it probably wouldn't be too hard to blanket the main corridors with wifi and would support growth, but it's a question of who would use it on a regular basis and my guess would be the happiest customers would be craigslist hookers.)

Heh.

(thoughtful look) Nonetheless, there's a novel here somewhere.

Probably. I'm not sure, myself, that the technology is going to actually work out right now but it is a harbringer of things to come.

(But what do I know? I've played all of twenty dollars in slots in my lifetime here. I'm probably the only Las Vegan who DOESN'T have a player's card somewhere.)

Hmm... didn't I see that one (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Game_%28episode%29) already...?
