I think a lot of US airlines are foolishly trying to mimic the Ryanair business plan, but forgetting that Ryanair 'shorthaul' flights are generally less than two hours, compared to a US carrier's two to six hour 'shorthaul'.
The 'domestic' portion of my recent trip to the US was pretty much three hours of hell in a metal tube, and that was on Continental who aren't cutting back on the frills. And the difference in ticket price just isn't as big when it's a three hour flight verses a one hour flight. So if I next have to fly in the US, I'll probably fly with someone who are putting in frills, not taking them out.
Of course, Ryanair themselves are facing problems as the fundamental cost of air travel rises.
