...I hate the flu. Hate it. I hate this stand-up, whoops, no, fall-right-over thing. Especially when I have work to do. Well, at least I can work on the laptop in bed. I just wish it wouldn't keep overheating and shutting down without warning. (Turns out this is a fault in the Sharp UM32W that can only be solved by getting the motherboard replaced -- to the tune of about $800, since the thing's out of warranty. Gah.)

Anyway: I've had some mails from people over the last few days about the writers' strike, saying they support it and want to know what they can do to help.

For the moment, try signing on to this online petition. Yeah, I know, such things can seem to be of questionable value. But we'll see. Please, spread the link around as widely as you can.

Another thing: those of you who are in LA or NY should feel free to go down and join the picket lines -- they'll be glad to have you. LA folks: the big picket today is at Fox. Thousands of writers and supporters will be there. I wish I could be. (Except I'd just fall down after taking about ten steps, which would dampen the occasion somewhat.)

And again, if you're not sure you understand the issues surrounding this whole fooforaw, try checking out the entries and sidebars at United Hollywood, where the strike captains are running a blog.

(You could also read our old friend Ron Moore's excellent interview on the subject over at IGN.)

(...And here's something worth seeing: past master of our craft, longtime Obi-Wan to my Luke [or Lukette, as the case may be]: Harlan Ellison talks about getting paid for one's work. Inimitably.)

Hmm. If the laptop is overheating badly, definitely make sure you're backing everything important up often. Some laptop hard drives are very sensitive to heat, especially since they're crammed in to close to the hottest parts of the computers compared to in a desktop system. In the last couple years, two of my friends have lost everything on their computers because their hard drives died from overheating after the system fans failed. There are services that can restore data from a hard drive with that kind of damage, but it's not a fun (or cheap) process.

You could turn your horizontal orientation into a statement about corporations being unwelcome obstacles to creative freedom, or something (get a friend to turn you into a FOX logo) :)

Peter is on the picket lines this morning in New York. He took a 9 to 1 shift so he could get home later this afternoon and finish the Iron Man novelization he is working on. It is a good thing he can still write comics and books.

Hope you kick the flu and start feeling better soon. My illness has been lingering since Saturday. At first I chalked it up to an allergic reaction to dust while cleaning, but now I have developed bronchitis. I haven't spent much time writing, and I still have a full week's worth of chores to do. Plus, on Tuesday, my broken windows will be replaced.

Hope you feel better soon, and that your laptop doesn't gobble anything important.

Not sure if this will amuse you, but I was re-reading Wizard's Holiday in bed last night, and I half-dozed off. For some reason, I dreamed the Lone Power was Alanis Morissette. I believe she was singing Utopia and (later) whining about her ex. ("He told me he had his own plane, like that was supposed to impress me. Heck, I've created sheaves of planes in the time he spent talking about himself. And wouldn't you know? Later I found out he was sharing headspace with Michael.")

Re. the flu, try Buttercup Syrup if you can get it, I find that helps a great deal.

Signed the petition... now I return to my NaNo. *g*
