The tenth planet gets a name

Or the second planette. (Or dwarf planet, or planetoid, or whatever-the-F we're calling the Small Guys Out Past Neptune this week.)

Anyway: the planet formerly known as Xena is now Eris.  ...Which makes so much sense, given recent events.  And her moon is Dysnomia. (Which I would otherwise have pegged as the word for the syndrome that makes you hate naming things, but never mind.)

But now let’s get serious. What’s the new body’s symbol?

It really ought to be an apple.

Dysnomia is one of the subclasifications of the Dyslexia, and is the group of symptoms realted to names and naming.

That name does make a whole lot of sense. I've seen a rather lot of Discordian glee on the topic.

I would laugh a lot if the symbol turns out to be an apple.

So instead of calling it Xena, they're calling it a word meaning "Lawless".

Hah, nice catch! Though, actually, I think someone's being slightly more (or less?) clever than that, even.
As Hesiod wrote in Theogony, "But abhorred Eris ('Strife') bore painful Ponos ('Toil/Labor'), Lethe ('Forgetfulness'), ...(lots of bad stuff)... Dysnomia ('Lawlessness') and Ate ('Ruin/Folly')."

'Dysnomia' comes from dis+gnostos, no+knowledge, that is ignorance -- but in context, ignorance of the law!

It just has to be an apple. Hail Eris! All hail Discordia! Kallisti! Heute die Welt, morgen das Sonnensystem!

We will sing this verse for Eris,
She's the Greek goddess of discord,
Which is why this bit doesn't rhyme
Or scan very well
But it's good enough for me!

Gimme that Real Old-time Religion...

In INWO terms: Discordian Society, supported by L-4 Society and Flat Earth Society, opposed by Big Media, successfully plays a "Hail Eris!" goal.

No, no, no! It has to be the company logo.

Whether that's Apple Corp (Beatles) or Apple computer's company logo will be the subject of a court battle which will be far longer and bloodier than that petty Trojan war.

[identity profile] patgund.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And I have just the Apple logo for Eris..... (wicked grin)

Lovely icon.

Shouldn't that be a Bramley apple, given the context of this post?

Eris? My newest computer is called Eris, as it's my fifth computer. (Yes, the others went A, B, C and D. Predictable R Us.) Like the previous four, it's got an Apple logo on it, too. So I definitely approve.

And a moon called "Lawlessness"? And people complain about my puns...

I think it should be Aeris from FF VII, seeing how they have the same name and all.

Icon!

[identity profile] amberdulen.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They originally called the planet Xena. Then they named the moon after the spirit of lawlessness.

I think somebody couldn't stand to give up the theme.

[identity profile] muppetk.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. But I *liked* that the planet was named Xena with a moon named Gabrielle! It's named after an important piece of *current* mythology, the way the others were when they were named a zillion years ago.

Phooey.

(Anonymous) 2006-09-14 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention the name change has eliminated a great piece of trivia for our great grandgeeks: "Which celestial body is named not for a Greek mythological figure, but for a television character?"

... well, to be sadly (and geekily) pedantic

or whatever-the-F we're calling the Small Guys Out Past Neptune this week

Don't forget Ceres is in the Asteroid belt so way sunward of Neptune :-)

But still, Eris, brilliant!

Kallisti!

[identity profile] the-10thdoctor.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well now.

That just made my entire day. :D

If you look in the Principia Discordia, there's a couple of symbols associated with Eris....

The apple
The Hand of Eris (two arrows colliding) --><--

Oooh, this is gonna mess with the astrologers something awful...

[identity profile] katerinfg.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What was wrong with "Xena"? I agree that they should have left it.

Drat, and here I was hoping it would be named Mondas... ideally with a strangely metallic symbol or a bit of gold with a slashed, "Don't do that," Sort of circle over it.

Plutonic planets

[identity profile] sir-dave.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Slightly out of date now, but ---

Since Herschel discovered the depths of Uranus,
the progress of planets has simply been heinous;
for next of all Neptune was nearly called Janus!
Still later, when Pluto was found on the boundary,
all names were still struck from a classical foundry;
though Ceres the series of asteroids governs,
she’s simply the largest and greatest of slovens.
But when desperation gave meaning to Xena,
(for U-b-three-ONE-three is harsher and meaner),
why not then have Charon as Sharon or Sheena?
It seems that in future all spheres made of granite
will answer to names no more noble than Janet;
today, they made Pluto a Mickey-Mouse planet.

You have met my friend [profile] miss_next, who was bearing a sacred penguin at the time. She brought back some very forceful advice of which you were the source, all of which has proved right. So now I find that my 'agents' are essentially nothing of the kind. How does one find a real agent? I've plenty to offer, and am dejected and lost.
