DD & PM at Con*Stellation 27: Huntsville AL, October 17-19, 2008

Here’s another 2008 convention gig I thought I’d post about here, since it hasn’t been mentioned on the blog previously, and this seems like a good way to get the word out.

The nice people at Con*Stellation 27 have asked me to come be their Guest of Honor in Hunstville AL over the weekend of October 17–19. Peter will be attending as well as a Special Guest to do assorted panel work, discourse on edged (and other) weaponry, and generally be his usual affable self (and I imagine there may be some testing of the local beers as well).    If any of you are located in the area and feel inclined to drop by, we’d love to see you.

Below is the map for those of you who want or need to know where the hotel is. (I’m told that LJ doesn’t care for frames, so you’ll need to click on the "View Larger Map" link to see the map.)

(BTW, here’s a link to the master appearances-and-signings list for 2008–2009.)

Looking forward to seeing you both next month in Birmingham :) I found one of your books (Door Into Summer) recently on a shelf in my lounge room. You know what a book looks like when it is described as "badgered"? Well, this one has been "birded" - and not as you might think. One of our female lovebirds found it while she was on a free fly around the room... she's in mega nest-building mode. She decided it was prime nesting material and has shredded the cover and the first 3-4 pages. I think a trip out to Bookbarn (http://www.bookbarn.co.uk/) may be required to find a replacement.

Gah... Door Into Sunset. I blame dealing the the DWCon finances... my brain has melted.

:) I know the feeling.

Meanwhile if the birdie feels the need to use my book as nesting material, well, I can think of worse things it could be used for. :)

i was hoping you'd be at Octocon, but you wont be :)

Mmm, no, with this scheduling I'm afraid not...

Well, I know where I'm going in October... and hopefully I'll get the library copy of SYWTBAW for my birthday like I asked. I'd really love an autograph. (And then I can dance around and squee like my boyfriend did after his handshake with Shigeru Miyamoto at E3 one year. Hee!)

side trip?

Are you going through New York at all to get there? I work in a bookstore in Albany, NY (3 hrs from NYC, we have a just-barely-international airport), & we would love to have you do a reading/signing if you have time for a side trip! Or if you are ever in the America area... We take authors out to dinner, give you a 20% discount on anything you buy in the store:), & you & your husband could crash in the store owner's guest room (she has 4 cats!). =)

If you're ever up for this, you can contact me on lj or at vacitk@yahoo.com, or at the webmistress address at http://www.fof.net...

Can I offer any research into touristy stuff?

I'm glad to hear this confirmed! I had emailed Lee Enfield-Burke to ask, figuring you two were probably busy, but I think the spamfilter must've looked at my email and spambinned it for being from Hotmail.

I have no idea how much spare time you'll have to either side of the convention, and I don't really think of Huntsville as a tourist center, but in addition to the tour at Space Camp there's the Unclaimed Baggage store ( http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com )not too far away, where Hoggle from Labyrinth is on display; and there's a nifty little cavern system very close to that called Cathedral Caverns (no home webpage for that one, sorry) that's a good way to get out of the heat for a few hours. The park ranger likes to do the tour at a pretty good walking clip, so if you go, definitely wear sturdy shoes and stretch a bit while she or he is talking about the old campsite in the mouth of the cave.

Unfortunately, the gentleman I know who has the right connections to offer you a tour of Marshall Space Flight Center ( http://www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/home/index.html ) -- or any part of Redstone Arsenal -- will have moved to Florida by middle of September. Most of the niftiest-looking stuff is in the Space & Rocket Center, though, and despite the ever-present shrieking kids and the somewhat astonishing ticket prices, it's worth visiting at least once.

By that time, the leaves will be in at least mid-turn -- those leaves that are going to bother to turn, as some stay green all winter despite being deciduous -- and the local "dry" county will have just held its Oktoberfest with sparkling apple cider. We'll either be having our best weather of the year, or we'll be having tornados. (You'll discover that we're getting kind of blasé about tornadoes, along the theme of "Oh, darnit, I was trying to get something done, and now the sky is green and the Air Raid sirens are bawling. Let's go sit in the hallway for a while. Bring along your PDA or laptop or a book, and a cushion in case you wind up sitting against the strongest wall for a while." I've lived here for eighteen years, now, and I think the tornado has only gone even within view of that hotel twice in all this time. You'll be in Madison County, with Limestone County the source of most incoming weather.)

If you'd like the fellow-author point of view on visiting Huntsville and Con*Stellation in particular, I remember that Mercedes Lackey was GOH some years ago, and probably has good info about

(( ack! Missed part of the post. Let's call this "continued". ))

... security and entertainment items of note. Madison County is *not* dry, so Peter will have no trouble finding interesting microbrews to try out.

I'm sure you're getting plenty of good info from the Con*Stellation folks, probably including everything I've thought to mention, but if you do think of any odd questions I'm always delighted to be of service!
