Guesting at StoCon '08 in Stockholm next weekend

There’s been no mention of this on the blog recently, so I thought I’d drop in a note about it now: I’ll be the Guest of Honor at StoCon ‘08 from the 1^st through the 3^rd of August. The convention venue is the Kulturhuset in Skarpnäck, a suburb of Stockholm (you can get there easily on the Metro: it’s about a 20–minute ride). If any of you are located locally, it’d be super to see you!

This is going to be a lot of fun, as while I’ve been to a lot of other cities in Europe, I’ve never yet made it up to any part of Scandinavia — and it’ll be super to be able to be there in the summertime.

(For those of Peter’s Swedish fans who might be wondering — unfortunately he won’t be able to make it: he presently has a work commitment that will be keeping him home.)

Stockholm is great - to look across the harbour at the fine waterfront is to see one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the world. That the water is clean enough to drink (a bit salty, mind, but not full sea salty) doesn't hurt. That it's on the Baltic, and behind the archipelago, means that there's almost no tide, and pretty well no chance of a storm getting that far up (the Vasa's wreck excepted). All of which means the buildings don't have to be built to resist maritime weather.

(If I recall correctly, the Vasa was launched, got across the harbour, got part way back, sank, was raised, and finally made it back to roughly where it was launched some centuries later. Not much of a voyage.)

Hmm, in Sweden alcohol costs a fortune (at least it used to), but I remember what was probably the best steak I have ever eaten, when we went to a Swedish Tolkien Society event, about 20 years ago.

On the subject of conventions, will you be at Denvention?

Re Denvention: unfortunately not. Between this convention appearance and another one we have scheduled (Discworld in Birmingham, where we teach the writers' workshop), Denvention would have been one con too many in too short a time.

We'll be in Montreal next year, though.

Indeed.

It's said that the Northern Germans resent the Danes as they pour across the border to drink more cheaply.

And that the Copenhagen area Danes resent the Swedes as they pour across the border to drink more cheaply.

Which indicates the prices differentials: Swedish drink is two price jumps higher than German.

It's my impression that a lot of the traffic on the Stockholm - Helsinki ferries are foot passengers who have no particular desire to get off in Finland, they just like getting tax-free drinks aboard.

We were in Oslo late last year, and were somewhat amazed by the cost of beer there. On the other hand, the 'Irish' pub we were in had a damned good atmosphere.

BTW, if you need a good small no-frills hotel in town, let me steer you toward this one. (http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187309-d232589-r17968913-Jedermann_Hotel-Munich_Bavaria.html) We liked it.

Many thanks, but we are booked at the Hubertus, which I understand is in the Dachau area. It's near my husband's office.

No probs. Feel free to recommend the Jedermann to anybody else, though. It's a nice place.

We did look at the site for the Jedermann, and it's booked solid. We are running into Oktoberfest and several other fall festivals, so most places are already full. We will definitely keep it in mind, though, since we are in Munich at least once a year.

Business trips can be a good thing.:)
